Renoise is a modestly-priced and largely community-driven project that takes what the developers call a 'unique bottom-up' approach to music making. What they're referring to is the fact that Renoise uses a vertical timeline and streamlined interface, designed to make music composition as logical and straightforward as possible. Renoise is remarkably complete for a music application in its price range, largely because many of the features have been suggested by users on the Renoise forum.
Renoise remains, however, a very complex application that only those that have used professional composition tools will feel comfortable with. On opening the main mixing panel, you'll find an intimidating mixing panel packed with sliders and buttons that won't mean much to you at first. The good thing though is that Renoise is a very well-dcumented application with both a QuickStart Guide and a thorough manual that takes some going through but which leaves no stone unturned.
Renoise is pretty flexible in terms of formats, supporting editing in WAV, AIFF, FLAC, OGG and MP3 format. The most unique feature is the vertical timeline sequencer that differs from horizontal timeline sequencers used by most mixing apps. Why this is an advantage probably only professional mixers will appreciate because for the general user, it doesn't appear to offer any.
If you're looking for a powerful digital audio workstation that doesn't come with a heavy price tag but is supported by a huge number of enthusiastic users, Renoise will certainly appeal.
